येन रामाद् अवाप्येह धनुर्वेदं महात्मना ॥
प्रोक्तान्य् अस्त्राणि दिव्यानि पुत्राय गुरुकाङ्क्षिणे ॥
एकम् एव हि लोके ऽस्मिन्न् आत्मनो गुणवत्तरम् ॥
इच्छन्ति पुत्रं पुरुषा लोके नान्यं कथं चन ॥
आचार्याणां भवन्त्य् एव रहस्यानि महात्मनाम् ॥
तानि पुत्राय वा दद्युः शिष्यायानुगताय वा ॥

yena rāmād avāpyeha dhanurvedaṃ mahātmanā ||
proktāny astrāṇi divyāni putrāya gurukāṅkṣiṇe ||
ekam eva hi loke 'sminn ātmano guṇavattaram ||
icchanti putraṃ puruṣā loke nānyaṃ kathaṃ cana ||
ācāryāṇāṃ bhavanty eva rahasyāni mahātmanām ||
tāni putrāya vā dadyuḥ śiṣyāyānugatāya vā ||

शब्दशः अर्थ

येन रामात् अवाप्य इहyena rāmāt avāpya ihaby whom, having obtained from Rama here; by whom, having gained from Rama here
धनुर्वेदम् महात्मनाdhanurvedam mahātmanāthe science of the bow, the great soul; the knowledge of archery, the great soul
प्रोक्तानि अस्त्राणि दिव्यानिproktāni astrāṇi divyānithe divine weapons were declared; the divine weapons were imparted
पुत्राय गुरुकाङ्क्षिणेputrāya gurukāṅkṣiṇeto the son who honored [him] as guru; to the son who revered [him] as guru
एकम् एव हि लोके अस्मिन्ekam eva hi loke asminonly one alone in this world; only one in this world
आत्मनः गुणवत्तरम्ātmanaḥ guṇavattarammore worthy than oneself; surpassing oneself
इच्छन्ति पुत्रम् पुरुषाःicchanti putram puruṣāḥmen desire a son; people wish for a son
लोके न अन्यम् कथं चनloke na anyam kathaṃ canain the world, and no other at all; in the world, and none other whatsoever
आचार्याणाम् भवन्ति एवācāryāṇām bhavanti evaacharyas have; teachers possess
रहस्यानि महात्मनाम्rahasyāni mahātmanāmsecrets, of the great souls; secrets, of the great-souled ones
तानि पुत्राय वा दद्युःtāni putrāya vā dadyuḥthey would give them to a son; they would give them to a son
शिष्याय अनुगताय वाśiṣyāya anugatāya vāor to a devoted disciple; or to a faithful disciple
अनुवाद

He who, being of great soul, having obtained from Rama Parashurama here the science of archery, declared the divine weapons to his son, who honored him as guru. For only one thing in this world do people desire — a son more worthy than themselves — and nothing else at all. Acharyas of great soul have their secrets; these they would give to a son or to a devoted disciple.
