स रथी प्रथमो लोके दृढधन्वा जितक्लमः ॥

यो न व्यथति संग्रामे वीरः सत्यपराक्रमः ॥
वेदस्नातो व्रतस्नातो धनुर्वेदे च पारगः ॥
महोदधिर् इवाक्षोभ्यो रामो दाशरथिर् यथा ॥
sa rathī prathamo loke dṛḍhadhanvā jitaklamaḥ ||
śīghro 'nila ivākrande caran kruddha ivāntakaḥ ||
asyatā yena saṃgrāme dharaṇyabhinipīḍitā ||
yo na vyathati saṃgrāme vīraḥ satyaparākramaḥ ||
vedasnāto vratasnāto dhanurvede ca pāragaḥ ||
mahodadhir ivākṣobhyo rāmo dāśarathir yathā ||
He, the foremost charioteer in the world, with a firm bow, having conquered weariness, swift as the wind in the battle-cry, ranging like enraged Antaka [Yama]. He by whose hurled arrows in battle the earth was pressed down; who does not falter in battle, a hero of true valor. Bathed in the Vedas, bathed in vows, and having reached the furthest limit in the science of archery, unshakable like the great ocean, like Rama, son of Dasharatha.

To martial might Dhritarashtra adds spiritual purity: "bathed in the Vedas and in vows." It is telling that Ashvatthaman appears not merely as a warrior but as a brahmin ascetic — and so his coming fall into furious vengeance is the more tragic. The verse teaches that the union of knowledge, vow, and strength is a high excellence; yet even this does not shield one from breaking, when grief and anger overwhelm the soul — the purest stronghold is vulnerable to sorrow.
