तच् छ्रुत्वा द्रोणपुत्रस्य पर्यवर्तत वाहिनी ॥
ततः सर्वे महाशङ्खान् दध्मुः पुरुषसत्तमाः ॥
भेरीश् चाभ्यहनन् हृष्टा डिण्डिमांश् च सहस्रशः ॥
तथा ननाद वसुधा खुरनेमिप्रपीडिता ॥
स शब्दस् तुमुलः खं द्यां पृथिवीं च व्यनादयत् ॥
तं शब्दं पाण्डवाः श्रुत्वा पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम् ॥
समेत्य रथिनां श्रेष्ठाः सहिताः संन्यमन्त्रयन् ॥
तथोक्त्वा द्रोणपुत्रो ऽपि तदोपस्पृश्य भारत ॥
प्रादुश्चकार तद् दिव्यम् अस्त्रं नारायणं तदा ॥

sa śabdas tumulaḥ khaṃ dyāṃ pṛthivīṃ ca vyanādayat ||
taṃ śabdaṃ pāṇḍavāḥ śrutvā parjanyaninadopamam ||
sametya rathināṃ śreṣṭhāḥ sahitāḥ saṃnyamantrayan ||
tathoktvā droṇaputro 'pi tadopaspṛśya bhārata ||
prāduścakāra tad divyam astraṃ nārāyaṇaṃ tadā ||
Hearing this, the army of Drona's son turned back to battle; then all the best of men blew their great conch shells. And, rejoicing, they struck the kettledrums and beat the drums by the thousands; thus the earth resounded, pressed by hooves and wheel-rims. That tumultuous roar filled the sky, the firmament, and the earth. Hearing that roar, like the thunder of clouds, the best of the charioteers, the Pandavas, gathered together and began to take counsel. Having thus spoken, Drona's son too, then, having touched water, O Bharata, manifested that divine weapon, Narayana.

The vow rekindles the retreating army—and amid the roar of conches and drums, Ashvatthaman, purified by touching water, summons forth the terrible astra. It is telling that the invocation of the most dreadful weapon is preceded by a ritual act of purification: even an instrument of wrath is loosed with a reverent gesture. The verse teaches that outward piety can coexist with a destructive intent; a rite that has not purified the heart of fury sanctifies not the deed but only its appearance—while the Pandavas, hearing the tumult, gather not in fear but in counsel, for wisdom meets calamity with reflection.
