यस्मिञ् जाते ददौ द्रोणो गवां दशशतं धनम् ॥
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो महार्हेभ्यः सो ऽश्वत्थामैष गर्जति ॥
जातमात्रेण वीरेण येनोच्चैःश्रवसा इव ॥
हेषता कम्पिता भूमिर् लोकाश् च सकलास् त्रयः ॥
तच् छ्रुत्वान्तर्हितं भूतं नाम चास्याकरोत् तदा ॥
अश्वत्थामेति सो ऽद्यैष शूरो नदति पाण्डव ॥

tac chrutvāntarhitaṃ bhūtaṃ nāma cāsyākarot tadā ||

यस्मिन् जाते ददौ द्रोणःyasmin jāte dadau droṇaḥat whose birth Drona gave; at whose birth Drona bestowed

गवाम् दशशतम् धनम्gavām daśaśatam dhanama thousand cows as a gift; a thousand cows as a gift

ब्राह्मणेभ्यः महार्हेभ्यःbrāhmaṇebhyaḥ mahārhebhyaḥto brahmins most worthy of honor; to brahmins most deserving of honor

सः अश्वत्थामा एषः गर्जतिsaḥ aśvatthāmā eṣaḥ garjatithat Ashvatthaman, this one, roars; that Ashvatthaman, this one, bellows

जातमात्रेण वीरेणjātamātreṇa vīreṇaby the hero, just born; by the hero, but newly born

येन उच्चैःश्रवसा इवyena uccaiḥśravasā ivaby whom, like Uchchaihshravas; by whom, as though Uchchaihshravas [the horse]

हेषता कम्पिता भूमिःheṣatā kampitā bhūmiḥneighing, the earth was shaken; neighing, the earth was shaken

लोकाः च सकलाः त्रयःlokāḥ ca sakalāḥ trayaḥand all the three worlds; and all the three worlds

तत् श्रुत्वा अन्तर्हितम् भूतम्tat śrutvā antarhitam bhūtamhearing that, an unseen being; hearing that, an invisible being

नाम च अस्य अकरोत् तदाnāma ca asya akarot tadāgave him a name then; gave him a name then

अश्वत्थामा इति सः अद्य एषःaśvatthāmā iti saḥ adya eṣaḥ"Ashvatthaman"; that one now, this one; "Ashvatthaman"; that one now, this one

शूरः नदति पाण्डवśūraḥ nadati pāṇḍavathe hero roars, O Pandava; the hero bellows, O Pandava

अनुवाद

"At whose birth Drona gave a thousand cows as a gift to most honorable brahmins — that is Ashvatthaman roaring now. When that hero was but newly born, his neighing, like that of Uchchaihshravas [Indra's horse], shook the earth and all three worlds. Hearing this, an unseen being gave him his name then — 'Ashvatthaman'; that same hero now roars, O Pandava."

भाष्य

Arjuna weaves into the fearsome name the tale of its bearer's birth: the newborn neighed like a heavenly horse, and an unseen voice named him Ashvatthaman. It is significant that Drona, in his joy, gave a thousand cows to brahmins — the son's birth was consecrated by giving. The verse teaches that a name carries a destiny within it: he whose first cry shook three worlds now shakes armies; and a person often fulfills what was laid down at the very start of his path.
