स भिन्नकवचः शूरस् तोत्त्रार्दित इव द्विपः ॥
विमुच्य सशरं चापं भूरिव्रणपरिस्रवः ॥
सीदन् रुधिरसिक्तश् च रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् ॥
सूतेनापहृतस् तूर्णं द्रोणपुत्राद् रथान्तरम् ॥
अथान्येन सुपुङ्खेन शरेण नतपर्वणा ॥
आजघान भ्रुवोर् मध्ये धृष्टद्युम्नं परंतपः ॥
sa bhinnakavacaḥ śūras tottrārdita iva dvipaḥ ||
vimucya saśaraṃ cāpaṃ bhūrivraṇaparisravaḥ ||
sīdan rudhirasiktaś ca rathopastha upāviśat ||
sūtenāpahṛtas tūrṇaṃ droṇaputrād rathāntaram ||
athānyena supuṅkhena śareṇa nataparvaṇā ||
ājaghāna bhruvor madhye dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ paraṃtapaḥ ||
He, hero with armor pierced, like an elephant tormented by the goad, letting fall the bow with the arrow, bleeding from many wounds -- weakening and drenched in blood, he sank down on the floor of the chariot; swiftly carried off by his charioteer, away from the son of Drona, to another part of the field. Then with another well-feathered arrow, with smooth joints, he [Ashvatthaman], scorcher of foes, struck Dhrishtadyumna between the brows.

Satyaki, wounded, loses his bow and sinks in his chariot -- even his valor is broken; Ashvatthaman at once strikes Dhrishtadyumna between the brows. It is telling that the avenger alone presses two mighty warriors at once. The verse teaches that there comes an hour when one man's fury outweighs the strength of many; but even in this fearsome triumph a doom already shows through -- for strength born of grief consumes, above all, the one who bears it.
