तान् निहत्य रणे वीरो द्रोणपुत्रो युधां पतिः ॥
दध्मौ प्रमुदितः शङ्खं बृहन्तम् अपराजितः ॥
ततः सर्वे च पाञ्चाला भीमसेनश् च पाण्डवः ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नरथं भीतास् त्यक्त्वा संप्राद्रवन् दिशः ॥

अनुवाद
Having slain them in battle, the hero, the son of Drona, lord of battles, unconquered, blew his great conch in joy. Then all the Panchalas and Bhimasena the Pandava, in fear, abandoned Dhrishtadyumna's chariot and fled in every direction.

The triumphant blast of the unconquered Ashvatthaman's conch puts even Bhima and all the Panchalas to flight. It is telling that Dhrishtadyumna himself is abandoned -- the very man they had contended so fiercely to protect: fear proves stronger than loyalty. The verse teaches that terror scatters even recent solidarity; one who was just now shielded by his comrades is left alone in the hour of utmost fear -- for panic lays bare the fragility of alliances not bound by firmness of spirit.
