स तु यत्तो रथे स्थित्वा वार्य् उपस्पृश्य वीर्यवान् ॥
देवैर् अपि सुदुर्धर्षम् अस्त्रम् आग्नेयम् आददे ॥
दृश्यादृश्यान् अरिगणान् उद्दिश्याचार्यनन्दनः ॥
सो ऽभिमन्त्र्य शरं दीप्तं विधूमम् इव पावकम् ॥
सर्वतः क्रोधम् आविश्य चिक्षेप परवीरहा ॥
ततस् तुमुलम् आकाशे शरवर्षम् अजायत ॥
ववुश् च शिशिरा वाताः सूर्यो नैव तताप च ॥
sa tu yatto rathe sthitvā vāry upaspṛśya vīryavān ||
devair api sudurdharṣam astram āgneyam ādade ||
dṛśyādṛśyān arigaṇān uddiśyācāryanandanaḥ ||
so 'bhimantrya śaraṃ dīptaṃ vidhūmam iva pāvakam ||
sarvataḥ krodham āviśya cikṣepa paravīrahā ||
tatas tumulam ākāśe śaravarṣam ajāyata ||
vavuś ca śiśirā vātāḥ sūryo naiva tatāpa ca ||
He, having steeled himself, standing on his chariot, having touched water [performing the rite of purification], the mighty one took up the weapon of Agni, hard even for the gods to withstand. Marking the visible and invisible hosts of foes, the son of the Acharya, having consecrated the blazing arrow, like a smokeless fire, utterly possessed by wrath, let it fly -- the slayer of enemy heroes. Then a tumultuous rain of arrows arose in the sky; and cold winds blew, and the sun no longer gave heat.

Ashvatthaman, having purified himself by touching water, invokes the fiery weapon: here too ritual precedes destruction. It is telling that nature itself responds -- the winds turn cold, the sun dims: creation shudders before the weapon of wrath. The verse teaches that outward piety can accompany a work of annihilation; a rite that has not cleansed the heart of fury consecrates only appearance -- while creation again testifies against violence through signs of turmoil.
