एतच् छ्रुत्वा संपरिगृह्य मर्त्यः प्रवृह्य धर्म्यम् अणुम् एतम् आप्य ।
स मोदते मोदनीयं हि लब्ध्वा विवृतं सद्म नचिकेतसं मन्ये

अनुवाद
Having heard and fully received this, a mortal, having drawn out the subtle [essence] of dharma and attained it, rejoices: he has obtained what is worthy of rejoicing. For Naciketas, I see, the abode stands open.

The verse describes the whole passage of a word into a man, in four verbs. śrutvā — "having heard": the beginning is always in hearing. saṁparigṛhya — "having fully embraced" (sam-pari-√grah): what is received must be taken in entire, not by picking the convenient pieces. pravṛhya — "having drawn out" (pra-√vṛh — "to pull forth", as one draws a stalk from the grass: the same image will return in the Upaniṣad's finale): out of the words heard one must draw the subtle pith — dharmyam aṇum, "the subtle [essence] of dharma". āpya — "having attained": the last step is not understanding but possession.
sa modate modanīyaṁ hi labdhvā — "he rejoices, for he has obtained what is worthy of rejoicing": modanīya is a gerundive: that in which, by its very nature, one ought to rejoice. A quiet polemic with the price-list of the first vallī: there what gladdens (preyas) was offered — here what deserves gladness has been found; the difference is the same as between the pleasant and the good.
vivṛtaṁ sadma naciketasaṁ manye — "for Naciketas, I think, the abode stands open". sadma is a house, a hall: an image Yama will later name outright (verse 3.9 and vallī 6) — "the supreme abode of Viṣṇu". The door is already open — not as a reward for listening but because the listener has become one who can enter: the gates of truth open not before those who know of them but before those who match them.
