यदा सर्वे प्रमुच्यन्ते कामा ये ऽस्य हृदि श्रिताः ।
अथ मर्त्यो ऽमृतो भवत्य् अत्र ब्रह्म समश्नुते

When all the desires that have nested in the heart fall away — then the mortal becomes immortal and here already attains Brahman.

yadā sarve pramucyante kāmā ye 'sya hṛdi śritāḥ — "when all the desires that have nested in the heart are released": the verb pramucyante is passive: not "a man casts off desires" but they themselves let go and fall away, as what has withered falls away when the living has come into the heart (the verb √śri — "to nest": desires are lodgers, not owners; they move out when the Owner has arrived).
atha martyo 'mṛto bhavati — "then the mortal is immortal": mortality, it turns out, was held not by the body but by desires: thread by thread they tied a man to the transient, and each was a channel of death (verse 73: after desires — into the snare). The threads have snapped — and death has nothing by which to take a man, though his body still walks the earth: atra brahma samaśnute — "here he attains Brahman": atra — "here"! — not on the other side but in the midst of this life: immortality is not a posthumous reward but a here-and-now condition of being untied from the mortal.
It is important to hear that the Upaniṣad does not preach an empty heart: the kāmāḥ fall away — but the thirst for the Eternal (verse 72: amṛtatvam icchan — "desiring immortality") remains and is fulfilled: samaśnute — "he tastes" (the same root √aś as in the Īśa Upaniṣad: "by knowledge he tastes immortality"). What departs is not the capacity to desire but the slavery of desires; the freed thirst drinks its fill for the first time.
