अथादित्य उदयन् यत्प्राचीं दिशं प्रविशति तेन प्राच्यान् प्राणान् रश्मिषु संनिधत्ते ।
यद् दक्षिणं यत् प्रतीचीं यद् उदीचीं यद् अधो यद् ऊर्ध्वं यद् अन्तरा दिशो यत् सर्वं प्रकाशयति तेन सर्वान् प्राणान् रश्मिषु संनिधत्ते

अनुवाद
"Rising, the sun enters the eastern quarter — and gathers into its rays the prāṇas of the east. [Illumining] south, west, north, the nadir, the zenith and the intermediate quarters, illumining all, it gathers all the prāṇas into its rays."

A picture of sunrise written as a liturgy. The sun, as it rises, praviśati — "enters" the east as a priest enters the sanctuary, and raśmiṣu sannidhatte — "stations in its rays" the prāṇas of every quarter: east, south, west, north, nadir, zenith, the intermediate points — all ten directions of space are enumerated so that no corner is left unembraced.
The sense of the image: light is not mere illumination but the bond between lives. Every ray is a thread between the sun-prāṇa and the breath of an individual creature; sunrise is the morning "gathering" of all that lives into one sheaf, a roll-call of life to which everything that breathes responds. Biology says as much in its own idiom — all the energy of the living is reprocessed sunlight; the Upaniṣad says something deeper: the very vitality of light comes from the Prāṇa that has entered the sun.
Hence the ancient attitude to sunrise as an hour of connection: he who greets the sun greets not an "incandescent ball" but the visible face of the universal life that gathers his own breath too into its rays. The next two verses will name that face.
