The eighth circle, and in it āyudha-catuṣṭaya, «the fourfold weapon»: the very bow, arrows, noose, and goad discussed when reading the thirty-third line. They are placed in the penultimate circle, at the very center: the Goddess's instruments lie closer to Her than anything else, and one entering meets them last before meeting Her. The arrangement is telling. Before arriving, a person passes by the very things he was caught with: past the noose that drew him, past the arrows that struck him. And he meets them once he has already understood whose they are.
This thought is voiced in one of the Bhāgavatam's most beloved passages: Kuntī asks for misfortunes, because misfortunes led her to Him (1.8.25). The implements that struck her turn out to be implements of delivery; and once arrived, one looks at them differently than when they were striking. This circle is, moreover, called as having para-apara-rahasya, «the highest and lower secret». There is not one secret here, then, but a division into what can be known and what cannot. An honest distinction: not everything hidden will be revealed, and the book does not conceal this.
