The ninth and last circle is the very point at the center, and it is called sarva-ānanda-maya, «all-blissful». Now that the whole series is before us, it is worth reading the names in order: the first — «charming the three worlds», the second — «fulfilling hopes», the third — «shaking everything», the fourth — «giving good fortune», the fifth — «accomplishing the purpose», the sixth — «protecting», the seventh — «removing illness», the eighth — «giving attainment», the ninth — «all-blissful». This order is a story. First a person is charmed by the world; then his hopes are fulfilled; then he is shaken; then good fortune and a purpose are given; then protection and healing come; then attainment; and only at the very end, bliss.
Bliss is placed last, and before it seven circles are occupied with something else — temptation, agitation, help, healing. The path, then, is described not as an ascent from joy to joy, but as a long road on which bliss is what lies at the end. This honesty is worth much. To promise bliss from the first step is the usual bait; and a book that spends eight circles speaking of confusion and illness, and says «all-blissful» only at the ninth, deserves more trust than one that begins with bliss.
