译文

Shaunaka said: 'From the lineage of Bhrigu onward, dear friend, you have told me the whole great tale; with that I am pleased with you, O son of the suta. And I shall ask you once more, O son of the suta: that story spoken by Vyasa, tell it to me again. The wondrous tales that the members of the assembly told, in the intervals of the rite, at that hard-to-accomplish great sacrifice, O great storyteller, on various subjects, just as they happened — these we wish to hear from you, O suta, for you are skilled.' Suta said: 'In the intervals of the rite the brahmins told tales grounded in the Vedas; but Vyasa constantly told the great tale of Bharata.' Shaunaka said: 'That great tale of Bharata, glorifying the Pandavas, which Krishna-Dvaipayana, asked by Janamejaya, then duly recounted in the intervals of the rite — that righteous, holy tale I wish to hear as it should be told, born from the ocean of mind of the great sage and of holy deed. Recount it, O best of the good, for I cannot be satisfied, O son of the suta.' Suta said: 'Well then, I shall recount to you the great, supreme tale — the Mahabharata, as Krishna-Dvaipayana conceived it, from the very beginning. Take delight, then, in what is told by me, O wise one, O twice-born; for in me too a joy of heart arises — to tell it.'
