Here the whole tale reaches its climax: mercy stays the hand already raised for vengeance. The image is wondrous: Takshaka, the guilty one, hangs suspended between heaven and fire, held fast by the righteous man's single word "stay!" — like a man frozen between the spokes of a turning wheel. Here is a visible sign that the word of one devoted to truth (satya-vadi) holds power even over fate: Astika's threefold "tishtha" proves stronger than both the priests' mantras and the fire's pull. It is significant that the king yields not under compulsion by force, but at the word of the assembled sages and by his own given vow — "let it be as Astika has said"; thus dharma and fidelity to one's word triumph over wrath. And note the king's closing prayer: "let the serpents be unharmed, let Astika rejoice" — a heart that only just now burned with vengeance now utters a blessing upon its former enemies. In this lies a victory of mercy not only over the serpents but over Janamejaya's own anger; the rite ceases, and the king attains true contentment — for peace of heart comes not from vengeance satisfied, but from vengeance relinquished.
