"And once more the kshatra held sway over this earth with its mountains, forests, and groves. When the kshatra ruled this earth by dharma, the classes with the brahmins at their head attained the highest joy. Kings, having cast off the faults born of passion and anger, imposing punishment by dharma only on those who deserved punishment, protected their subjects. When the kshatra was devoted to dharma, thousand-eyed Indra, lord of a hundred sacrifices, rained down sweetly, in the right place and at the right time, nourishing all creatures. Then no one died while still a child, and no one, before reaching youth, knew a wife. Thus, filled with long-lived creatures, this earth, bounded by the ocean, grew full, O bull among the Bharatas. The kshatriyas performed great sacrifices with abundant gifts, while the brahmins studied the Vedas together with the Angas and Upanishads. And the brahmins did not then trade in sacred knowledge, O king, nor did they recite the Vedas in the presence of a shudra. The vaishyas here tilled the land with oxen; they did not yoke emaciated cows to the shaft but fed them. People did not milk cows while the calves still lived on milk-froth; and merchants did not then sell their goods with false measures. People devoted to dharma, seeing dharma in everything, performed deeds in accord with dharma, O tiger among men. All the classes were devoted to their own work, O lord of men; thus then, O tiger among men, dharma diminished nowhere. At the proper time cows and wives gave birth, O bull among the Bharatas, and trees in their seasons bore flowers and fruits. Thus, while the Krita Yuga rightly endured, O king, the whole earth grew filled with a multitude of living beings."
