Here Vaishampayana turns to the hidden matter — the "secret of the gods" that explains the descent of the heroes. It is significant that the story begins with the restoration of the kshatra after Parashurama's destruction of it: ascetic brahmins, uniting with the kshatriya women "only at the proper season, not out of desire," bring the warrior class back to life. Here is an image of dharmic purity: even the union of husband and wife is not driven by lust but performed as a duty (dharma), for the sake of offspring, at the right time; the continuation of a lineage is thus a sacred act, not an indulgence of the senses. The description of the restored golden age — long life, freedom from affliction, all classes established in dharma with the brahmins at their head — presents an ideal: where dharma and self-restraint reign, there long life, health, and harmony among the classes follow. In this way the text prepares a contrast: this golden age will be followed by an onslaught of demons, and it will become clear why the descent of the gods was needed.
