Abhimanyu was born to Subhadra by Arjuna — nephew of Vasudeva (Krishna) and grandson of the great-souled Pandu. From the five Pandavas, five sons were born to Krishna (Draupadi) — youths handsome in form, skilled in every weapon. Prativindhya was born of Yudhishthira, Sutasoma of Vrikodara (Bhima), Shrutakirti of Arjuna, and Shatanika was the son of Nakula; likewise from Sahadeva was born the valiant Shrutasena. From Bhima, by Hidimba, in the forest was born Ghatotkacha. To Drupada was born Shikhandin — a girl who later took on male nature, whom the yaksha named Sthuna, wishing to please her, made into a man. For the strife of the Kurus there gathered many hundreds of thousands of kings, ready to fight in battle. Their names are countless — not to be reckoned even in tens of thousands of years; but here the chief ones have been named, by whom this tale is unfolded.

Here the roll of births closes with a new generation — the children of the Pandavas: Abhimanyu, Ghatotkacha, Shikhandin. The birth of Abhimanyu is telling: grandson of Pandu and nephew of Krishna, he weaves together the lines of Bharata and Yadu, and through him (and his son Parikshit) the line will continue after the war. So even amid this roll of the doomed, the seed of a future renewal already lies hidden. Herein is a consolation: however great the coming destruction, the thread of the line — and of dharma — will not be cut; providence preserves its continuation. Notable too is the wondrous fate of Shikhandin, a girl turned man: an instrument of fate, prepared for the fall of Bhishma. And the closing word — "their names are countless, but the chief have been named" — again shows the tradition's humility before the vastness of its subject: only the essential is named, for the fullness exceeds all telling. With this, the "descent of the parts" is complete: every actor, earthly and celestial, has now been shown; and the tale will go on to unfold their deeds. Thus scripture, having rooted its heroes in a heavenly design, prepares us to see in the drama to come not chance, but the fulfillment of a higher will.
