Vaishampayana said: “There was a king named Uparichara, ever devoted to dharma; once, faithful to his vow, he resolved to go hunting. That Vasu, the delight of the Puru line, by Indra's counsel took possession of the beautiful land of Chedi, worthy to be held. To him, who had laid down his weapons in his hermitage and dwelt in the joy of austerity, the thunder-wielding god himself appeared. Thinking, ‘This king, by his austerity, is worthy of the rank of Indra,’ he gently turned that king away from his penance. Indra said: ‘Let not this dharma be disturbed on earth, O lord of the earth; guard it — for dharma, when guarded, upholds the whole world. Guard the dharma of the world, ever diligent and composed; devoted to dharma, you shall then attain the eternal, blessed worlds. Becoming my dear friend — I dwelling in heaven, you on earth — dwell in that region of the land which is, as it were, the earth’s udder in its abundance, O lord of men. This land is rich in cattle, auspicious, stable, abundant in wealth and grain, easily defended, pleasant, endowed with bounties fit for enjoyment. Above all others is this land, full of wealth, jewels, and the like; the earth is full of good — so dwell among the Chedis, O lord of Chedi. In the land of Chedi the peoples are virtuous, well contented, good; and even in jest there is no false speech there — how then otherwise, in weighty matters? The people there are devoted to the good of their elders; they do not divide property from the father; lean cows are not yoked, but are fattened. All the classes ever abide in their own dharma among the Chedis, O bestower of honor. Nothing that exists in the three worlds is unknown to them. The wondrous crystal chariot I bestow, which travels through the sky, shall be yours. You alone among all mortals, mounted upon this finest of chariots, shall roam the heights like an embodied god. And I give you a victory garland of unfading lotuses, which in battle shall keep you unwounded by weapons. And this, O lord of men, shall be your mark — renowned as “Indra’s garland,” auspicious, unmatched, and great.’”
