Here, opening the detailed narrative, Vaishampayana turns to the ancient king Uparichara Vasu, the righteous ruler of the land of Chedi. It is telling that Indra turns the king away from severe austerity toward a different discipline — the guarding of dharma in royal service: “dharma, when guarded, upholds the whole world.” Here lies an important truth: not everyone is meant to withdraw into the forest for asceticism; for a king or a householder, dharma lies in the righteous discharge of duty within the world, and this is no lesser path than renunciation. The description of the blessed land of Chedi — where “not even in jest is there falsehood,” where all classes abide in their own dharma, and where people are devoted to their elders — is an image of an ideal society upheld by truthfulness and by the observance of varnashrama. Thus the scripture shows that outward prosperity — wealth, peace, abundance — flows from the inner righteousness of a people; the land flourishes where dharma is kept. And Indra's gifts — the heavenly chariot and the unfading garland — mark heaven's favor toward a righteous king.
