Here takes place the meeting of the sage Parashara and Satyavati — from whom Vyasa will be born. Notable are the sage's compassion and power: he does not compel, but heeds the maiden's anxiety for her honor and restores her maidenhood, and beyond that grants her fragrance. This union is no mere desire but an instrument of providence: it is needful (karyavan), for from it Vyasa, the compiler of the Vedas, will come. Notice Satyavati's chastity and good sense: even before a great sage she keeps her duty to her father and guards her honor — and the text praises her for this ('wise'). The gift of fragrance in place of the 'smell of fish' is an image of transformation: providence, having chosen her as foremother, purifies and raises her from the bodily to the spiritual; the fisher-girl who once 'smelled of fish' becomes 'fragrant for a yojana.' So too the soul chosen for something higher is transformed by grace. The wondrous birth of Vyasa is prepared through chastity, compassion, and blessing.
