Parashara, wandering among places of pilgrimage, saw her, who for her father's service was steering a boat upon the water. Seeing her, exceedingly beautiful, desired even by the siddhas, that lovely one, the wise bull among sages desired her — the learned one desiring, for a needful purpose, that maiden, daughter of Vasu. She said: 'Behold, lord, sages stand on both banks; in their sight, how could our union take place?' Thus addressed by her, the lord produced a mist, by which that whole region became as if plunged into darkness. Seeing the mist raised by the great sage, the maiden, astonished and abashed, wise as she was, said: 'Know me, lord, as a maiden ever obedient to her father's will; from union with you my maidenhood would be spoiled, O sinless one. With my maidenhood thus defiled, how shall I, O best of the twice-born, be able to go home? Nor shall I dare remain in the house, O wise one. Consider this, lord, and provide for what must follow.' To her, having spoken thus, the best of sages, pleased, said: 'Having fulfilled my desire, you shall remain a maiden. Choose also a boon, timid one, whatever you wish, O lovely one; for my favor has never before been in vain, O bright-smiling one.' Thus addressed, she chose as her boon the supreme fragrance of the body; and the lord granted her what her heart desired. Then, having obtained the boon, pleased, adorned with the qualities of womanhood, she entered into union with that sage of wondrous deeds. Hence on earth her name became famed as 'Gandhavati' (the Fragrant One); people could smell her fragrance from a yojana away. Hence her name became famed as 'Yojanagandha' (She Whose Fragrance Spreads a Yojana). And the lord Parashara then departed to his own dwelling.
