译文

Vaishampayana said: "Yayati, son of Nahusha, taking on the age of Puru, joyfully partook of the pleasures dear to him. The best of kings, as he desired, as he was able, at the proper time, at his pleasure, partook of objects not contrary to dharma, as befitted him. He satisfied the gods with sacrifices, and likewise the ancestors with shraddha rites, the destitute with acts of grace, the foremost brahmins with desired gifts. Guests with food and drink, vaishyas with protection, shudras with gentleness, and bandits with restraint. Yayati, delighting all his subjects as was proper, according to dharma, ruled as if he were, in very presence, a second Indra. That king, of lion's gait, youthful, devoted to the objects of the senses, enjoyed supreme happiness without violating dharma. That king, having obtained auspicious pleasures, sated yet weary, remembered the term of a thousand years drawing to its close. Knower of time, mighty, having reckoned the kalas and kashthas -- the smallest measures of time -- and considering the term fulfilled, he then spoke to his son Puru: 'O tamer of foes, my son, through your youth I have enjoyed the objects of the senses as I desired, as I was able, at the proper time. O Puru, I am pleased; blessings upon you; take back this youth of yours, and take this kingdom too, for you are the son who has done what pleases me.' Then King Yayati, son of Nahusha, took back old age, and Puru once more took back his own youth."
