Here the tale of Yayati comes to a close -- with Puru's enthronement and the father's departure to the forest. Yayati's final act is significant: having given up the kingdom, he "dedicates himself to forest life" (vanaprastha). Here is the fulfillment of the ideal of the ashramas: having had his fill of worldly life in the season of householdership, a person in old age relinquishes power and withdraws to austerity and reflection on the highest; thus life is crowned not by clinging to the world but by renunciation. Yayati, who once "could not have his fill of youth," now departs of his own accord -- as the fuller tale will show -- having grasped the futility of passion. The origin of the peoples is also significant: from the five sons come the Yadavas, the line of Krishna, the Yavanas, the Bhojas, the Mlecchas, and the Pauravas. Thus the tradition traces many peoples, including the "foreign" ones -- the Yavanas, the Mlecchas -- back to a single forefather, Yayati; the idea of the kinship of all people, through a common ancestor. And -- significant for the listener Janamejaya, and for us -- "the line of the Pauravas, in which you yourself were born": thus the tale of Yayati is no digression, but the direct lineage of the listener and of the epic's heroes. From Puru come the Pauravas; from them, the Kurus, the Bharatas, and finally the Kauravas and the Pandavas. Thus, through Puru's filial sacrifice, the founding of the principal lineage of the Mahabharata is laid.
