Here Hidimba reveals the source of her change — Kama, who holds sway over all. It is telling that she does not hide her own longing either: the love that visited her turned into a wish for lawful marriage, not lust; she "chose as husband," seeking wedlock, not a fleeting encounter. The force of desire can be ordered by dharma: longing directed toward marriage and toward the worthy rises toward the good. Also telling is her inability to carry off the family — as though fate itself restrained her so that what was fitting might come to pass. The verse shows that love seeking union by law is no vice, but the beginning of a new, righteous path.
