Vaishampayana said: "Hardly had he heard her word when Yudhishthira sprang up, and Arjuna, and Nakula, and valiant Sahadeva. They saw those two, grappling, dragging one another, craving victory, like two lions, fierce in battle. The two, having seized each other and dragging one another, raised earthly dust resembling the smoke of a forest fire; and, covered with the dust of the earth, resembling mountains, they shone like two crags wrapped in mist."

Here the verse shows the grandeur of the clash through a sequence of majestic comparisons — lions, mountains, a forest fire. It is telling that the brothers, having sprung up, do not rush at once into the fight: they trust Bhima and only watch the duel. A true battle of the righteous carries within it grandeur, not commotion: it resembles a clash of elements, not a brawl. Telling too is the comparison of the fighters to two crags in the mist — for a moment they seem equal in might, but the coming outcome will show the inequality of their strength. The verse raises the account to the image of a cosmic struggle in which dharma overcomes brute force.
