राक्षसेन तथा भीमं क्लिश्यमानं निरीक्ष्य तु ॥
उवाचेदं वचः पार्थः प्रहसञ् शनकैर् इव ॥
भीम मा भैर् महाबाहो न त्वां बुध्यामहे वयम् ॥
समेतं भीमरूपेण प्रसुप्ताः श्रमकर्शिताः ॥
साहाय्ये ऽस्मि स्थितः पार्थ योधयिष्यामि राक्षसम् ॥
नकुलः सहदेवश् च मातरं गोपयिष्यतः ॥
rākṣasena tathā bhīmaṃ kliśyamānaṃ nirīkṣya tu ||
uvācedaṃ vacaḥ pārthaḥ prahasañ śanakair iva ||
bhīma mā bhair mahābāho na tvāṃ budhyāmahe vayam ||
sametaṃ bhīmarūpeṇa prasuptāḥ śramakarśitāḥ ||
sāhāyye 'smi sthitaḥ pārtha yodhayiṣyāmi rākṣasam ||
nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca mātaraṃ gopayiṣyataḥ ||
"Seeing Bhima thus hard-pressed by the rakshasa, Partha, softly laughing, spoke this word: 'Bhima, fear not, O mighty-armed one; we did not notice how you came to grips with this terrible one — we were asleep, worn out by toil. I stand ready to help, Partha, and will fight the rakshasa; and Nakula and Sahadeva will guard our mother.'"

Here brotherly love shows itself in readiness to share the danger. It is telling that Arjuna, hardly awake, at once offers his help and arranges for the mother's protection: in the hour of trial the family closes ranks as one. Here is the dharma of brotherhood: each is ready to stand in another's place, and each is given his own service — the elder fights, the younger guard the mother. Telling too is Arjuna's light laughter: among the brothers there is neither alarm nor reproach for having slept through it — only calm assurance. The verse shows the harmony of the Pandavas, in which the strength of one is completed by the devotion of all.
