इति तत् धनुः आदाय शुल्कावाप्तं महारथःiti tat dhanuḥ ādāya śulkāvāptaṃ mahārathaḥso [saying] and taking that bow, won as the marriage-price, the great chariot-warrior,
भ्रात्रा भीमेन सहितः तस्थौ गिरिः इव अचलःbhrātrā bhīmena sahitaḥ tasthau giriḥ iva acalaḥtogether with his brother Bhima, stood like an unmoving mountain;
ततः कर्णमुखान् क्रुद्धान् क्षत्रियान् तान् रुषा उत्थितान्tataḥ karṇamukhān kruddhān kṣatriyān tān ruṣā utthitānthen those enraged kshatriyas headed by Karna, risen up in fury,
संपेततुः अभीतौ तौ गजौ प्रतिगजौ इवsaṃpetatuḥ abhītau tau gajau pratigajau ivathe two fearless ones met, as two elephants meet rival elephants;

Here two stand unshaken before the fury of many. Telling is the comparison to a mountain: before the storm of royal wrath the brothers do not move -- the fearlessness of the righteous does not waver even before numbers. Telling too is the pretext the kings seek: 'even a brahmin may be killed in battle' -- anger finds a loophole even in law, in order to raise a hand against a supposed brahmin. Here is the steadfastness of defenders and the cunning of malice. Thus the verse shows that truth stands like a mountain, while wrong seeks its own justifications.
