Here prudence restrains them from fighting the brahmins. It is telling that the kings decide to halt the clash so as not to fight brahmins blindly: fear of sin against a brahmin cools their ardor. Here one sees that reverence for the brahmin curbs even angered kings. Thus the scripture shows that even fury retreats before the sanctity of that station; and the kings, not knowing they are fighting kshatriyas, withdraw out of reverence for what they take to be brahmins.
