Here reconciliation appears as both a purification and an advantage. It is telling that Vidura calls for 'washing away the disgrace' of the arson through kindness to the Pandavas: good deeds atone for past wrong. The political consideration is also telling: yesterday's enemy Drupada will become an ally. Here it is revealed that the path of dharma is beneficial both for the soul and for the state. Thus the text reveals the twofold benefit of reconciliation; and repentance in deed washes away shame.
