न हृतं तं वयं विद्मः श्येनेन आखुं कथं चनna hṛtaṃ taṃ vayaṃ vidmaḥ śyenena ākhuṃ kathaṃ canawe do not know at all that the mouse was carried off by the hawk;
अन्ये अपि भवितारः अत्र तेभ्यः अपि भयम् एव नःanye api bhavitāraḥ atra tebhyaḥ api bhayam eva naḥand there may be other mice here too, and from them also we have fear;

Here the children reason soberly, weighing the certain against the uncertain. The principle stated is telling: 'a doubtful death is preferable to a certain one' — the wise choose the lesser, uncertain risk over sure destruction. In this lies the gift of discernment [viveka], undeceived by wishful desire. So the scripture shows the good sense of the fledglings; and they do not entrust themselves to unverified hope.
