Vaishampayana said: "Having passed through the land ever full of herds of cattle, abounding in water, with beautiful trees, and having reached Mount Goratha, they beheld the Magadha city [Girivraja]."

Here at last the tyrant's stronghold comes into view -- a rich, flourishing land under an unrighteous ruler. It is telling that even under an evil lord the land is fertile: a country's prosperity does not vindicate the lawlessness of its ruler. The verse shows the difference between the well-being of a land and the righteousness of its power; next the heroes will enter the city.
