"Then to the king, his heart bewildered with anxiety, together with his wife, his counselors, and his household priest, a bodiless voice said: "This son of yours, o king, has been born glorious and mighty; therefore he should not be feared -- undisturbed, protect the child. For you are not his death, and his time has not yet come; but the one who will slay him with a weapon has already been born, o king.""

The voice from above reveals what human anxiety cannot reach: the time, the form, and the agent of the infant's death are already determined -- "he is already born." Tellingly, the parents are told not to fear but to protect the child: to dread what is already ordained is senseless, for it will come to pass in its own hour, no sooner. The verse teaches peace before the will of Providence: what is preordained cannot be turned aside by fear nor hastened by anxiety. Knowing that the hour and the hand are hidden within a higher order, the wise do not torment themselves in vain, but do what is required of them -- here, guarding the child entrusted to them -- and leave the rest to the One by whom all is measured.
