अपराधशतं क्षाम्यं मया ह्य् अस्य पितृष्वसः ॥
पुत्रस्य ते वधार्हाणां मा त्वं शोके मनः कृथाः ॥

"Thus [reassured], she then said to Krishna, the descendant of Yadu: "Forgive, o mighty one, the offenses of Shishupala." "A hundred offenses of his, [though] deserving death, shall be forgiven by me, o aunt -- of your son; do not give your mind to grief.""

Krishna's boon reveals both mercy and its rightful measure: He will forgive "a hundred offenses, [though] deserving death." This number is telling -- the Lord's patience is great, but not without limit by the letter: mercy is long-suffering, yet justice sets a bound. The verse teaches that the Supreme is inexpressibly forbearing -- He will forgive one deserving execution a hundred times over -- yet forgiveness is not indulgence without end: beyond that measure judgment intervenes. And this very measure is itself a gift: a hundred reprieves are given to Shishupala so that he might come to his senses. Mercy that endures a hundredfold is no fault of the one forgiving if the forgiven turns it to evil; the Lord's long-suffering tests, it does not corrupt.
