पुत्रस्नेहाभिसंतप्ता जननी वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥
येनेदम् ईरितं वाक्यं ममैव तनयं प्रति ॥
प्राञ्जलिस् तं नमस्यामि ब्रवीतु स पुनर् वचः ॥
श्रोतुम् इच्छामि पुत्रस्य को ऽस्य मृत्युर् भविष्यति ॥
अन्तर्हितं ततो भूतम् उवाचेदं पुनर् वचः ॥

译文

"Having heard the word spoken, when the voice then vanished, the mother, inflamed with love for her son, spoke: "To the one by whom this word was uttered concerning my son, I bow with joined palms; let him speak again. I wish to hear who will be my son's death." And the hidden voice spoke this word once more:"

注释

A mother's love does not withdraw before the ominous: hearing of her son's coming death, she does not disown him but bows to the voice and longs to know more -- only to protect him. Tellingly, how strong this attachment proves: fear of deformity is overcome by tenderness. The verse teaches the strength of maternal love, which sees its own child even in the monstrous; yet it also reveals its limit -- for no love can turn aside what is ordained from above. The mother asks about fate in order to evade it, not knowing that one should ask not how to escape destiny but how to meet it in harmony with the Lord's will.
