Bhishma's conclusion lays bare the bitter root of the insolence: Shishupala "grew puffed up by Govinda's boon." Tellingly, the very mercy granted for his salvation is turned by him into an occasion for outrage: knowing of his hundred reprieves, he squanders them on abuse, imagining himself untouchable. The verse teaches how dangerous mercy is in the hands of the ungrateful: the gift of long-suffering, received without humility, becomes an instrument of ruin. One who derives from the Lord's magnanimity a license to sin prepares his own end -- for the more that is forgiven the proud, the heavier his fall when the allotted measure is exhausted. Grace trampled turns into a verdict.
