And he withdrew beyond the bounds of the worlds and lost his senses and consciousness. And, overwhelmed by his own sins, he could not be recognized. And he lay hidden in the water, like a writhing serpent. And when the lord of the gods, seized by fear of brahmanicide, vanished from sight, the earth appeared as though devastation had swept over it. It became treeless, and its forests withered; the flow of the rivers was cut off; the reservoirs lost all their water; and calamity befell the animals because the rains had ceased. And the gods and all the great Rishis were in extreme fear; and the world had no king, and calamities overtook it. Then the gods and the divine sages in heaven, separated from the chief of the gods, were struck with terror and wondered who would be their king.

This passage (5.10.41-45) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds even as war becomes inevitable. Key themes: dharma. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of envoys, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
