The brahmanas say that, though a man may have knowledge of edible things, his hunger will not be satisfied unless he actually eats. Those branches of knowledge that assist in the accomplishment of work bear fruit, but not the others, for the fruit of labor is what is visibly manifest. A man tormented by thirst drinks water, and thereby his thirst is quenched. This result is, without doubt, the result of labor. Herein lies the efficacy of work. If anyone thinks that something else is better than work, I consider his labor and his words to be meaningless. In the world beyond, the gods prosper through work. It is by work that the wind blows. It is through work that the tireless Surya rises every day and becomes the cause of day and night, and Soma passes through the months, the fortnights, and the conjunctions of the constellations. Fire kindles itself and burns through deeds, bringing good to mankind. The tireless goddess Earth bears this heavy burden by her strength. The tireless rivers, bringing satisfaction to all (ordered) beings, swiftly carry their waters. The tireless Indra, possessed of mighty strength, pours down rain, making the sky and the quarters resound.

This fragment (5.29.6-10) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key theme: Sanjaya. Here dharma is revealed through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
