Then you may praise or blame, as you please. The brahmana should study, offer sacrifices, engage in charity, and dwell in the finest of all the holy places on earth; he should teach, officiate as priest in the sacrifices performed by others worthy of such assistance, and accept gifts from persons of good repute. Likewise, the kshatriya should protect the people according to the precepts of the law, diligently practice charity, offer sacrifices, study the whole of the Veda, marry, and lead the life of a virtuous householder. If he possesses a virtuous soul and practices the holy virtues, he may readily attain the realm of the Supreme Being. The vaishya should study, earn diligently, and accumulate wealth through trade, agriculture, and the care of cattle. He should act so as to please the brahmanas and kshatriyas, be virtuous, perform good deeds, and be a householder. Set out below are the duties assigned to the shudra from ancient times. He should serve the brahmanas and be obedient to them; he should not study; sacrifices are forbidden to him; he should be diligent and ever active, doing everything for his own welfare.

This fragment (5.29.21-25) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key theme: dharma. Here dharma is revealed through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
