"And you too must act in the same way, O bull among the Bharatas: toward your chief kinsmen, do not fall under the sway of anger. The undertakings of the wise, O bull among the Bharatas, are joined with the three aims of life; when the three aims cannot be attained together, men follow dharma and gain. But when the aims are separate, the steadfast follows dharma, the middling follows gain, and the fool, carrying Kali within, follows only desire. He who, carried away by the senses through greed, abandons dharma and seeks pleasure and gain by improper means, perishes. He who seeks pleasure and gain should from the very outset follow dharma alone, for gain and desire never depart from dharma."

Krishna directs his instruction to Duryodhana directly and practically: to set aside pride, listen to friends, hold to dharma, and choose peace with the Pandavas. The point of this passage is not abstract morality but a warning of the concrete destruction of the dynasty, should the desire for power be placed above truth, kinship, and prudence.
