राम उवाच
यथासि सृञ्जयस्यास्य तथा मम नृपात्मजे ॥
ब्रूहि यत् ते मनोदुःखं करिष्ये वचनं तव ॥
अम्बोवाच
भगवञ् शरणं त्वाद्य प्रपन्नास्मि महाव्रत ॥
शोकपङ्कार्णवाद् घोराद् उद्धरस्व च मां विभो ॥
भीष्म उवाच
तस्याश् च दृष्ट्वा रूपं च वयश् चाभिनवं पुनः ॥
सौकुमार्यं परं चैव रामश् चिन्तापरो ऽभवत् ॥
किम् इयं वक्ष्यतीत्य् एवं विमृशन् भृगुसत्तमः ॥
इति दध्यौ चिरं रामः कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः ॥
कथ्यताम् इति सा भूयो रामेणोक्ता शुचिस्मिता ॥
सर्वम् एव यथातत्त्वं कथयाम् आस भार्गवे ॥

kim iyaṃ vakṣyatīty evaṃ vimṛśan bhṛgusattamaḥ ||
iti dadhyau ciraṃ rāmaḥ kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ ||
kathyatām iti sā bhūyo rāmeṇoktā śucismitā ||
sarvam eva yathātattvaṃ kathayām āsa bhārgave ||
Rama said: 'O king's daughter, as you regard this Srinjaya, so regard me as well. Tell me what pain is in your heart; I will fulfill your word.' Amba said: 'O venerable one, O steadfast in your vow, today I have taken refuge in you. O lord, draw me out of the terrible ocean of the mire of grief.' Bhishma said: Seeing her beauty, her youthful age, and her utmost delicacy, Rama fell into deep thought. The best of the Bhrigus pondered long: 'What will she say?' — and was overcome with compassion. When the bright-smiling one again heard from Rama: 'Speak,' she told Bhargava everything as it truly was.

In this chapter Amba's wish becomes a clearly formulated demand: not merely to find protection, but to see Bhishma requited. Akritavrana distinguishes two possible courses of action — compelling Shalva or punishing Bhishma — and shows that the root of Shalva's doubt lay precisely in Amba's forcible abduction. The appearance of Rama Jamadagnya lifts the matter into the realm of the highest dharma: an ascetic bearing arms listens to a woman's suffering, seeks a just resolution, and is ready first to send word, and only then, if that word is refused, to use force. Amba names Bhishma as the source of her misfortune and asks Rama to fulfill her long-held inner vow.
