Kripa, son of Sharadvata, went forth against Brihatkshatra of the Kaikeyas and covered him with a shower of arrows, O Bharata. The enraged Kaikeya drenched Gautama with a downpour of arrows. Having slain each other's horses and cut through each other's bows, these two wrathful warriors, now chariotless, closed in for a sword-fight; their battle became terrible in aspect and exceedingly fierce. Then King Drupada, greatly delighted, O crusher of foes, went forth against the elated Jayadratha of Sindhu. The king of Sindhu struck Drupada with three arrows in battle, and Drupada struck back at him. Their fierce battle was terrible in aspect and yet brought joy to those who watched, like the meeting of Shukra and Angaraka. Your son Vikarna advanced on swift horses against the mighty Sutasoma, and a battle began. Vikarna pierced Sutasoma with arrows, yet did not shake him; Sutasoma likewise struck Vikarna, and this seemed a marvel. The great charioteer Chekitana, valiant and greatly enraged, attacked Susharman, tiger among men, for the sake of the Pandavas. Susharman, O great king, held back the great charioteer Chekitana with a great shower of arrows in battle, but the furious Chekitana showered him with arrows, as a great cloud covers a mountain."

Sanjaya lists this multitude of duels not for a bare catalogue but to show the scale of the dharmic trial: each king meets his own knot of karma on the shared field of Kurukshetra.
