译文

Sanjaya said: 'That shower of arrows, unbearable even for the danavas, the lord of kings withstood in battle, as a mighty elephant withstands a downpour. Then your son, best of the Bharatas, overcome with anger, hissing like a serpent and finding himself in the utmost peril, loosed twenty-five sharp naracas. They suddenly fell upon the foremost of the rakshasas, O king, like enraged venomous serpents upon Mount Gandhamadana. Pierced by them and streaming with blood like an elephant in must, this devourer of flesh resolved to destroy the king and took up the great shakti, capable of splitting even mountains. Blazing, like a huge meteor, as Maghavan raises his thunderbolt, the mighty-armed Ghatotkacha raised it, wishing to kill your son. Seeing the shakti raised, the lord of the Vangas hastened and drove a mountain-like elephant against the rakshasa. On this excellent, mighty, and swift elephant he took the path where Duryodhana's chariot stood, and with the elephant he blocked your son's chariot. Seeing the road blocked by the wise king of Vanga, Ghatotkacha, great king, with eyes red with rage, hurled the raised great shakti at that elephant. Struck by it, loosed from Ghatotkacha's arm, the elephant gushed forth blood, fell, and died, O king. As the elephant was falling, the mighty lord of the Vangas swiftly leapt down and reached the ground. Seeing his finest elephant felled and his army shattered, Duryodhana fell into deep anguish. But placing the kshatriya dharma and his own sense of honor foremost, when the moment to retreat came, the king stood unmoving like a mountain. Nocking a sharp arrow, blazing like the fire of Kala, he loosed it in utmost fury at that dreadful night-wanderer. Seeing the arrow flying toward him, shining like Indra's vajra, the huge-bodied Ghatotkacha evaded it with agility. Then he roared fiercely once more, his eyes red with rage, terrifying all beings, like a cloud at the end of the age.'
