nirbibheda mahārāja rājaputraṃ bṛhadbalam ||
sa gāḍhaviddho vyathito rathopastha upāviśat ||
bhṛśaṃ krodhena cāviṣṭo rathastho rākṣasādhipaḥ ||
cikṣepa niśitāṃs tīkṣṇāñ śarān āśīviṣopamān ||
bibhidus te mahārāja śalyaṃ yuddhaviśāradam ||
After this a tumultuous, hair-raising battle broke out between the chief of the rakshasas and Duryodhana's army. On every side rose the tumultuous sound of twanging bows, great king, like burning bamboo. The sound of weapons striking against the warriors' armor arose, O king, as though mountains were splitting apart. The sight of tomaras loosed by heroic arms and flying through the air, lord of the people, was like crawling serpents. Then the mighty-armed lord of the rakshasas, in the utmost fury, drew his huge bow and, uttering a fearsome roar, in rage cut through the teacher Drona's bow with a crescent-headed arrow. With a broad-headed shaft he felled Somadatta's banner and roared. He pierced Bahlika with three arrows in the chest, wounded Kripa with one, and struck Chitrasena with three. With an arrow loosed from a full draw and precisely aimed, he struck Vikarna in the collarbone; drenched in blood, he sank down onto the platform of his chariot. Then the great-souled Ghatotkacha, enraged once more, sent fifteen naracas at Bhurishravas, best of the Bharatas; they pierced through his armor and swiftly plunged into the ground. He struck down the charioteers of Vivimshati and Ashvatthaman; the two of them, releasing the reins of their horses, fell upon the platforms of their chariots. With a crescent-headed arrow he tore down the gold-adorned boar emblem of the king of Sindhu, great king, and with a second arrow cut his bow. Then, with four naracas, red-eyed with rage, he killed the four horses of the great-souled king of Avanti. With an arrow loosed from a full draw, golden and sharp, he pierced through the prince Brihadbala, great king; deeply wounded and in anguish, he sank down onto the platform of his chariot. The lord of the rakshasas, standing on his chariot and wholly seized by fury, hurled sharp, honed arrows like venomous serpents; they struck Shalya, skilled in battle, great king.
