Sanjaya said: "In the evening the elder of the Kurus, the grandsire, fell to the ground, plunging the sons of Dhritarashtra into grief and bringing joy to the Panchalas. Bhishma, hurled down from his chariot onto the ground, lay upon a bed of arrows, not touching the earth even then. When this boundary tree of the Kurus fell in the ruin of the battle, a tumultuous cry arose among all beings: 'Ha! Ha!' O king, fear entered the hearts of the kshatriyas in both armies when they saw Bhishma, son of Shantanu, with his armor and banner shattered. The Kurus turned back, and so did the Pandavas, O lord of the people. The sky was covered in darkness, the sun's radiance vanished, and the earth roared when Bhishma, son of Shantanu, fell. 'He is the best of the knowers of Brahman; he is the path for those who know Brahman' - so said the beings of the resting bull among the Bharatas. 'Having once understood the wish of his father Shantanu, who was tormented by desire, he made himself celibate' - so said the rishis, who circled around the foremost of the Bharatas as he lay on his bed of arrows, together with the siddhas and charanas. When Bhishma, son of Shantanu, the grandsire of the Bharatas, fell, your sons, O Bharata, did not know what to do. They stood pale-faced, bereft of splendor, ashamed, overcome with shame, their faces lowered. The Pandavas, having gained victory and standing at the forefront of the battle, all blew their great conches adorned with golden netting. Amid the loud blaring of trumpets and music, we saw on the battlefield the mighty Bhimasena, son of Kunti, filled with great joy and exulting. He had slain mighty enemies in battle. Then a tumultuous confusion seized the Kurus. Karna and Duryodhana sighed again and again when Bhishma, who bore the burden of the Kauravas, fell. Everywhere arose the cry of 'ha, ha,' and everything fell into disorder."

Sanjaya emphasizes the twofold nature of the moment: for the Pandavas it is victory, for the Kurus the collapse of their support. Yet even amid rejoicing and grief, Bhishma is at once described as a knower of Brahman, whose fall surpasses an ordinary death in war.
