译文

Dhritarashtra said: "What were the warriors like then, Sanjaya, deprived of Bhishma - the mighty one, godlike, who kept his vow of celibacy for his duty toward his father? I think that even then the Kurus and other kings were as good as slain, when Bhishma, out of compassion, did not strike Drupada's son. What could be more painful for me than to hear today that my forefather has fallen because of my own evil thought? My heart, Sanjaya, must be made of stone, since, hearing of Bhishma's fall, it does not shatter into a hundred pieces. Again and again I cannot bear that Devavrata has fallen in battle, though once even Jamadagnya's son could not kill him with divine astras. Tell me, Sanjaya, what this lion among men, Bhishma, who sought victory, did in battle today when he was struck down."
