दृष्ट्वा च पतितं भीष्मं पुत्रो दुःशासनस् तव ॥
उत्तमं जवम् आस्थाय द्रोणानीकं समाद्रवत् ॥
भ्रात्रा प्रस्थापितो वीरः स्वेनानीकेन दंशितः ॥
प्रययौ पुरुषव्याघ्रः स्वसैन्यम् अभिचोदयन् ॥
तम् आयान्तम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य कुरवः पर्यवारयन् ॥
दुःशासनं महाराज किम् अयं वक्ष्यतीति वै ॥
ततो द्रोणाय निहतं भीष्मम् आचष्ट कौरवः ॥
द्रोणस् तद् अप्रियं श्रुत्वा सहसा न्यपतद् रथात् ॥
स संज्ञाम् उपलभ्याथ भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ॥
निवारयाम् आस तदा स्वान्य् अनीकानि मारिष ॥
विनिवृत्तान् कुरून् दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवापि स्वसैनिकान् ॥
दूतैः शीघ्राश्वसंयुक्तैर् अवहारम् अकारयन् ॥
विनिवृत्तेषु सैन्येषु पारंपर्येण सर्वशः ॥
विमुक्तकवचाः सर्वे भीष्मम् ईयुर् नराधिपाः ॥
व्युपारम्य ततो युद्धाद् योधाः शतसहस्रशः ॥
उपतस्थुर् महात्मानं प्रजापतिम् इवामराः ॥
ते तु भीष्मं समासाद्य शयानं भरतर्षभम् ॥
अभिवाद्य व्यतिष्ठन्त पाण्डवाः कुरुभिः सह ॥
अथ पाण्डून् कुरूंश् चैव प्रणिपत्याग्रतः स्थितान् ॥
अभ्यभाषत धर्मात्मा भीष्मः शांतनवस् तदा ॥

sa saṃjñām upalabhyātha bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ||
nivārayām āsa tadā svāny anīkāni māriṣa ||
vinivṛttān kurūn dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavāpi svasainikān ||
dūtaiḥ śīghrāśvasaṃyuktair avahāram akārayan ||
vinivṛtteṣu sainyeṣu pāraṃparyeṇa sarvaśaḥ ||
vimuktakavacāḥ sarve bhīṣmam īyur narādhipāḥ ||
vyupāramya tato yuddhād yodhāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ ||
upatasthur mahātmānaṃ prajāpatim ivāmarāḥ ||
te tu bhīṣmaṃ samāsādya śayānaṃ bharatarṣabham ||
abhivādya vyatiṣṭhanta pāṇḍavāḥ kurubhiḥ saha ||
atha pāṇḍūn kurūṃś caiva praṇipatyāgrataḥ sthitān ||
abhyabhāṣata dharmātmā bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavas tadā ||
Having seen Bhishma fallen, your son Duhshasana rushed with the greatest swiftness toward Drona's ranks. This hero, sent by his brother, armed and with his own troop, urging on his warriors, went there. When the Kurus saw Duhshasana approaching, they surrounded him, O great king, wondering, 'What will he say?' Then the Kaurava told Drona that Bhishma had fallen. Hearing this bitter news, Drona suddenly fell from his chariot. Coming to himself, the valiant son of Bharadvaja then halted his own troops, O venerable one. Seeing that the Kurus had withdrawn, the Pandavas too, through messengers on swift horses, ordered their soldiers to be withdrawn. When the armies had withdrawn in due order, all the kings, having removed their armor, went to Bhishma. Ceasing the battle, hundreds of thousands of warriors approached the great-souled Bhishma, as the immortals approach Prajapati. The Pandavas together with the Kurus came to the resting bull of the Bharatas, bowed to him, and stood still. Then the righteous-souled Bhishma, son of Shantanu, addressed the Pandavas and Kurus, who stood before him with reverence.
