दध्मौ वेगेन महता फल्गुनः पूरयन् दिशः ॥
तेन शब्देन वित्रस्ता संशप्तकवरूथिनी ॥
निश्चेष्टावस्थिता संक्ये अश्मसारमयी यथा ॥

āsasāda raṇe vyūḍhāṃ traigartānām anīkinīm ||
sa devadattam ādāya śaṅkhaṃ hemapariṣkṛtam ||
dadhmau vegena mahatā phalgunaḥ pūrayan diśaḥ ||
tena śabdena vitrastā saṃśaptakavarūthinī ||
niśceṣṭāvasthitā saṃkye aśmasāramayī yathā ||
Having spoken thus to Hrishikesha, the mighty-armed Arjuna then charged, in that battle, upon the array of the Trigartas drawn up for the fight. Raising the conch Devadatta, adorned with gold, Phalguna blared it forth with mighty breath, resounding through all the quarters. At that blare the host of the samshaptakas, seized with terror, stood frozen in the battle, motionless as if made of iron.

Those who only a moment ago were exulting turn to stone with terror at the very first blast of the conch. The sound of Devadatta — the "god-given" — exposes the difference between boasting and the encounter with true power: a vow is easy to speak, but the body reveals the truth when the enemy stands near. Here the fragility of a courage propped up only by shouting shows itself: it crumbles at the first trial. It is telling that Arjuna has not yet struck a single blow — the sound alone suffices, for behind it stands a power the Divine itself serves. The verse teaches that valor is tested not before battle but within it; and that the presence of true might cools the hottest fervor, revealing what it was actually worth.
