Then Subahu, with thirty sturdy arrows of hardened iron, struck Savyasachin deep in his diadem. From those gold-feathered, straight-flying arrows lodged in his diadem, the Diademed One shone, as if in a golden headdress, like a towering sacrificial post. But the son of Pandu, in that battle, severed Subahu's arm-guard with a bhalla-arrow, and at once showered him again with a rain of arrows.

The enemy's arrows, lodging in Arjuna's diadem, do not disfigure him but turn him into something like a golden headdress — and he stands there like an erected sacrificial post (yupa). The image is not accidental: the yupa is the center of the sacrifice, to which the sacrificial animal is bound; and here the battlefield appears as an altar on which the great sacrifice of war is offered. It is telling that the very blows of the enemy only magnify the warrior's majesty — what was meant to wound him turns into his adornment. The verse teaches that trials and blows aimed against a worthy man are able not to demean him but to exalt him; and that a man standing in truth turns the very attack into a crown of his glory.
