सहसैन्यौ सहानीकं यथेन्द्राग्नी पुरा बलिम् ॥
तद् उत्पिञ्जलकं युद्धम् आसीद् देवासुरोपमम् ॥
मत्स्यानां केकयैः सार्धम् अभीताश्वरथद्विपम् ॥
vindānuvindāv āvantyau virāṭaṃ matsyam ārcchatām ||
sahasainyau sahānīkaṃ yathendrāgnī purā balim ||
tad utpiñjalakaṃ yuddham āsīd devāsuropamam ||
matsyānāṃ kekayaiḥ sārdham abhītāśvarathadvipam ||
Vinda and Anuvinda, both from Avanti, attacked Virata-Matsya, both attended by their hosts -- upon him attended by his own host -- just as Indra and Agni of old attacked Bali. That battle was chaotic, like the battle of gods with asuras -- of the Matsyas in alliance with the Kekayas, where horses, chariots, and elephants were fearless.

Two brothers from Avanti attack Virata together -- and tradition likens this to the ancient war of the gods against the asura Bali. Again, as with the Kekaya brothers, the strength of brotherly unity shows itself: two acting as one are more formidable than each alone. The comparison to the battle of gods and asuras raises the earthly clash to a cosmic drama of eternal contention. It is telling that even the horses and elephants are called "fearless" -- the courage of riders passes into their whole formation. This teaches that concord among those who act together multiplies their strength; that even animals in battle catch the spirit of the men who lead them; and that behind every earthly clash tradition discerns a reflection of the primordial war of higher powers, lending the passing contest the measure of the eternal.
