तत्र युद्धान्य् अदृश्यन्त प्रततानि बहूनि च ॥

padātīnāṃ ca bhadraṃ te tava teṣāṃ ca saṃkulam ||
naitādṛśo dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ saṃgrāmo naiva ca śrutaḥ ||
droṇasyābhāvabhāveṣu prasaktānāṃ yathābhavat ||
idaṃ ghoram idaṃ citram idaṃ raudram iti prabho ||
tatra yuddhāny adṛśyanta pratatāni bahūni ca ||
Thus arose hundreds of duels -- of chariots, elephants, horses and foot -- good fortune to you -- of your men and of those [enemies], in a general melee. Never before was such a battle seen, nor even heard of, as that which happened among men obsessed, some with the wish for Drona's death, others for his preservation. "This is terrible! This is wondrous! This is fearsome!" -- with such cries, O lord, many continuous skirmishes were seen there.

The chapter closes with the threefold cry of the stunned onlookers -- "terrible! wondrous! fearsome!" -- fusing together the incompatible feelings that a great battle awakens: shudder, delight, and awe all at once. It is telling that this whole unprecedented battle boils around a single point: some are obsessed with Drona's death, others with his survival. The being or non-being of one man has become the axis on which everything turns. The verse teaches that the grand spectacle of war stirs a mixed response in the soul -- horror and admiration inseparably joined; that the fate of the whole may hinge on the life or death of one; and that the tradition, in handing down this threefold cry, honestly shows the whole duality of the human gaze upon war -- it is at once repellent, entrancing, and therefore especially dangerous to a heart ready to be captivated by what ought instead to horrify it.
