ये के चन गतास् तस्य समीपम् अपलायिनः ॥
न ते प्रतिन्यवर्तन्त समुद्राद् इव सिन्धवः ॥
महाग्राहगृहीतेव वातवेगभयार्दिता ॥
समकम्पत सा सेना विभ्रष्टा नौर् इवार्णवे ॥
अथ रुक्मरथो नाम मद्रेश्वरसुतो बली ॥
त्रस्ताम् आश्वासयन् सेनाम् अत्रस्तो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥
ye ke cana gatās tasya samīpam apalāyinaḥ ||
na te pratinyavartanta samudrād iva sindhavaḥ ||
mahāgrāhagṛhīteva vātavegabhayārditā ||
samakampata sā senā vibhraṣṭā naur ivārṇave ||
atha rukmaratho nāma madreśvarasuto balī ||
trastām āśvāsayan senām atrasto vākyam abravīt ||
Whoever came close to him, unyielding, did not return, just as rivers do not return from the sea. Like a boat seized by a great crocodile, tormented by fear of the storm, that host shuddered, shattered like a ship in the sea. Then the mighty Rukmaratha, son of the lord of the Madras, fearless, encouraging the terrified host, spoke these words.

Whoever approaches the youth "does not return, as rivers do not return from the sea": the image shows the irreversibility of the destruction that swallows all who draw near him. The host trembles "like a boat in a storm" — fear has seized the multitude. And yet there is found one fearless man, encouraging the rest: even amid general panic, the courage of individuals does not die out. The verse teaches that there are powers which swallow without return, as the sea swallows rivers, and it is unwise to dare approach them; that fear, like a storm, can shake an entire army; but also that among the frightened there will always be found one whose spirit stands firm, who alone tries to hearten the wavering — though, as what follows will show, his own boldness will turn against him.
