सुकल्पितेनोह्यमानः स्यन्दनेन विराजता ॥

"Enough of your fear, O warriors! This one is nothing while I stand firm. I shall seize him alive — of that there is no doubt." Having spoken thus, the valiant one charged at Abhimanyu, borne along by his skillfully adorned, shining chariot.

Rukmaratha boasts of taking the youth "alive" — a boast that outruns the deed, tinged with self-conceit: "while I stand, he is nothing." Thus pride shows itself, presenting the wished-for as already accomplished. It is significant that his intent is not to kill but to capture and humiliate — and for that his punishment will be all the heavier. The verse teaches that bravado promising an easy victory is a mark not of strength but of vanity; that the intent not to defeat but to humiliate an enemy by taking him alive is especially insolent and therefore especially punished; and that Rukmaratha, who had just encouraged the wavering, himself fell victim to his own boast, for one who promises before the deed is done is most often the first to be disgraced.
